Born and educated in The Netherlands, Louis Meerlo immigrated to New Zealand in 1988. In 1983 to 1985 Louis attended M.T.U.S. Secondary Horticultural College and then went onto R.H.T.L. State Academy for Landscaping until 1988, during which time he served one year in the Dutch Army.

In 1988 until 1991 Louis was the Production and Sales Manager for a Wholesale Tree, Shrub and Perennial Nursery in Napier managing up to 20 staff.

From 1991 until 1995 Louis was the Sales Manager for a Propagating Nursery in Taradale, Napier managing up to 30 staff.

From 1995 until 1998 Louis was the Manager of Classic Plants - Bedding Plants (Annuals) & Perennial Nursery and in 1998 became the Managing Director of Classic Plants 1998 Limited.
